Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 on Food Additives requires that food additives are subject to safety evaluation by EFSA before they are permitted for use in the EU. In addition, it is foreseen that food additives must be kept under continuous observation and must be re-evaluated by EFSA. A programme for the re-evaluation of food additives already permitted in the EU before 20 January 2009 was set up under Regulation 257/2010. Under this programme, food additives go through a new risk assessment by EFSA, which includes an assessment of consumer exposure to additives through the diet. Interested parties are invited to provide data on usage level of additives in food. In this context, FEDIOL regularly provides information on the use of additives of relevance for the oils and fats sector.
