REACH (Registration, Evaluation, and Authorisation of CHemicals)

The objectives of the REACH system are to improve the protection of human health and of the environment from hazards of chemicals, maintain competitiveness, and enhance innovation of the EU chemicals industry.

FEDIOL members, like all businesses are subject to the implementation of REACH, whether they are manufacturers, importers or downstream users of ‘substances’.
All substances have to be registered in a central database managed by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). The information requirements and deadlines for such registration largely depend on the volumes produced/imported and the hazard of the substance.
Substances are registered for particular technical uses, which includes providing information on intrinsic properties and hazard of each substance, uses and safe way of handling as well as a risk assessment for human health and the environment.

A number of substances have however been exempted from registration:

"Vegetable fats, vegetable oils, vegetable waxes; animal fats, animal oils, animal waxes; fatty acids from C6 to C24 and their potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium salts; glycerol" under the conditions set out in annex V(9). (Commission Regulation 987/2008 amending Regulation 1907/2006 on REACH as regards Annexes REACH Amendment Annex V)
For detailed explanation and background information on how the different legal exemptions apply and to give clarification about when an exemption can be applied, please refer to the ECHA Guidance document on Annex V.

The REVODS Consortium:

The Consortium has been established to represent the interest of EU manufacturers and importers of substances derived from vegetable oils with regard to their obligations under REACH.
