Waste

The Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC includes conditions laying a basis for a distinction between by-products and  waste. FEDIOL has been closely involved in developing these conditions. Thanks to communcation by the collective food industry, these are now part of the  new directive. On the basis of these conditions, measures may be adopted to determine community-wide criteria for specific substances to be regarded as a by-product. The new directive solved the issue of the former waste legislation which could be read such that protein meal, a regular product for our  industry was waste.  That  interpretation  provided  a ‘wrong’ connotation  to the valuable meals from crushing and lead to inappropriate constraints in the supply chain.
